A Community Built Around Aviation
EAA Chapter 509 is a volunteer-run aviation group dedicated to connecting people to flight through learning, mentorship, and community. We believe aviation should be welcoming, accessible, and grounded in shared experiences that bring people together.
Why We Exist
Aviation has the power to inspire curiosity, confidence, and connection — but only when people feel welcome to step in and participate. Our chapter exists to make aviation approachable, to share knowledge, and to create opportunities for learning at every stage.
We focus on building community, encouraging mentorship, and opening doors to aviation for those who may not otherwise have access.
As a local chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), we’re part of a global community dedicated to aviation education, safety, and grassroots flying. Our chapter operates locally, led entirely by volunteers, and focused on serving our surrounding community.
EAA Chapter 509 is for anyone with an interest in aviation. Our community includes pilots, builders, students, parents, educators, and people who are simply curious about flight.
Some people come with years of experience. Others are just getting started. Many do not own an airplane and that is okay.
What matters most is curiosity, respect, and a willingness to learn.
What Guides Us
Learning by Doing – We believe hands-on experiences and shared knowledge make aviation meaningful.
Welcoming and Inclusive – We strive to create an environment where everyone feels comfortable participating.
Mentorship and Safety – Learning is strongest when it’s supported and safe.
Community Connection – Aviation thrives when it’s rooted in the local community.
Youth Opportunity – We’re committed to creating meaningful aviation experiences for young people
Led by Volunteers
EAA Chapter 509 is guided by a volunteer board and supported by members who generously give their time, skills, and enthusiasm to support aviation education and community connection.
Our volunteers play an active role in shaping the chapter’s direction, planning and supporting events, and creating welcoming opportunities for people to engage with aviation. From coordinating programs and outreach to mentoring youth and supporting new participants, our volunteers are the heart of the chapter and the reason our work continues to grow and evolve.
