Tyler Shaver
Volk Field MOA & F-35 Ejection
Join us as we welcome Lt. Col. Tyler Shaver, a 2009 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and a Naval Aviator with 13 years of experience flying military fighter aircraft, including the F/A-18 Hornet and multiple versions of the F-35 Lightning II.
Today, Tyler flies the F-35A with the Wisconsin Air National Guard's 115th Fighter Wing and serves as Director of Operations at the Combat Readiness Training Center (CRTC) at Volk Field.
Tyler will give us a look at daily military flight operations in Central Wisconsin and discuss Mid-Air Collision Avoidance (MACA) within the special-use military airspace surrounding Volk Field. This is a great opportunity for local pilots to better understand the military activity taking place in our region and how general aviation and military aircraft safely share the airspace.
He will also share the incredible firsthand story of his December 15, 2022 F-35B ejection at Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth. During an acceptance flight, the aircraft suffered a catastrophic engine failure while hovering, forcing Tyler to make the decision to eject. Video of the incident was widely shared around the world.
His emergency decision-making helped limit damage to the aircraft, and he escaped with only minor injuries. His actions earned him the 2023 Air National Guard Director of Safety Aircrew of Distinction Award and a single-sortie Air Medal.

Air Traffic Controller Derek Smith: Runway Incursions
This month our gathering is hosting the RSAT meeting.
Runway incursions remain a serious concern nationally. One important component of our ongoing efforts to improve surface safety at EAU Airport involves conducting a Runway Safety Action Team (RSAT) meeting at least once each year.
The purpose is to unite those individuals and organizations that are actively involved in air traffic operations and movement of aircraft, vehicles, and equipment on the Airport Operations Area (AOA). We look for participation from all major airport interests including tenants, fixed base operators, airport operations and maintenance personnel. Participants are asked to help develop recommendations and solutions to enhance surface safety.

EAA Chapter 509 is excited to host Young Eagle Rallies, giving youth the chance to experience the excitement of flight. During a Young Eagle flight, volunteer pilots take children on a short introductory airplane ride and introduce them to the world of aviation.
These flights are available for youth ages 8 to 17 and are conducted by experienced volunteer pilots who love sharing their passion for aviation while prioritizing safety and education.
To help the event run smoothly and ensure a great experience for every participant, walk ins will not be available. Each child must register in advance and select a time slot before the event.

Boyceville Hot Air Ballooning – Presentation and Balloon Glow
Back by popular demand, Boyceville Hot Air Ballooning returns for a special evening dedicated to the magic of ballooning. Our guest presenters will give us a close up look at how these giants of the sky come to life. From the setup process and ground crew coordination to the powerful burners that light up the evening sky, you will gain a new appreciation for this unique form of aviation.
Weather permitting, there may even be an opportunity to see the balloon lift off. The evening will conclude with a beautiful balloon glow, creating a memorable experience for all ages.
***Please note this event will not be held at the clubhouse. We will gather at Rosenbaum Airfield.
Bring your family and friends for this one of a kind demonstration. It will be a beautiful evening of aviation, community, and unforgettable views.

Flying Hamburger Social
Join EAA Chapter 509 for our Flying Hamburger Social, an informal evening of aviation, food, and fellowship. Whether you fly in or drive in, everyone is welcome to attend.
Hosted at the Ascension Hangar at Chippewa Valley Regional Airport, this event is all about bringing aviation-minded people together, encouraging local pilots to get out and fly, connecting with friends, and meeting fellow aviation enthusiasts from airports throughout the region. It's a smaller, more relaxed fly-in atmosphere where the focus is simply enjoying time around airplanes and good company.
We'll be grilling hamburgers and providing a variety of sides and fixings. Bring your appetite, your aviation stories, and a friend.
Whether you're a pilot, aircraft owner, aviation enthusiast, student pilot, or simply curious about aviation, we'd love to have you join us.
All proceeds from the event will support EAA Chapter 509's Youth Scholarship Program, helping provide educational and flight training opportunities for the next generation of aviators.

Monthly Gathering
Join us for a special presentation by Mary Berg as she takes us through the critical opening days of the D-Day invasion and explains how the success of the Allied push into Europe depended on just a few key objectives.
Her presentation will focus on the role of the 82nd Airborne Division and the fight for control of three small French hamlets during the first three days following June 6, 1944. Mary will explore how these seemingly small battles became pivotal to beginning the defeat of the Nazi war machine and ultimately helped put Europe on the road to liberation and Victory in Europe Day (VE Day).
Mary Berg is with “Where They Fought, WWII European Tours” and is a longtime member of the 8th Air Force Historical Society, as well as a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association and the Commemorative Air Force. She also serves on the board of the Harold Deutsch WWII Roundtable.

Pancake Breakfast & Fly-In
Join us for a morning of aviation fun at the Pancake Breakfast and Fly In at the Ascension Hangar at Chippewa Valley Regional Airport (KEAU).
Guests can enjoy a delicious pancake breakfast while exploring an array of airplanes on display and participating in fun activities for kids.
Free Young Eagle airplane rides will also be offered for youth ages 8 to 17, providing a chance for young people to experience their first flight with a volunteer pilot (parental consent and weather permitting). John Cesnik Bush Pilot
John brings a remarkable and diverse aviation background shaped by his time as a bush pilot with First Air. Flying tundra tire aircraft into remote terrain and operating on skis across glaciers and the polar ice pack, John gained firsthand experience in some of the most demanding flying conditions in the world. His stories offer a rare glimpse into the skill, judgment, and adaptability required in true backcountry and Arctic operations.
In addition to sharing insights from those adventures, John will also discuss the BRS Whole Aircraft Rescue Parachute System and its evolving role in aviation safety. He’ll explore how the system works, where it fits into modern aircraft design, and the impact it has had on pilot decision-making and survivability.

STEAM Leaders in the Chippewa Valley
EAA Chapter 509 will have a booth at the STEAM Leaders in the Chippewa Valley event, hosted at Chippewa Falls Senior High School. This event focuses on helping students explore potential career paths and better understand the opportunities available to them in a variety of industries.
At our booth, students will meet representatives from different career paths within aviation, offering real world insight into the many ways to be involved in the field. From maintenance and technical skills to broader aviation roles, we will highlight how Chapter 509 is a community of aviation enthusiasts with diverse experiences and backgrounds.
We will still offer hands on activities, including creating riveted keychains with mechanics demonstrating proper riveting techniques, and paper airplane challenges using our 3D printed crossbow airplane launchers. These interactive elements allow students to try practical skills while learning about the careers connected to them.
We are excited to be part of an event that helps students see what is possible and to showcase the many pathways aviation can offer.

Join us for our February monthly gathering as Dan Bass presents on the dangers of carbon monoxide in flight. Carbon monoxide exposure is a serious and often underestimated risk in aviation. Dan will share important information on how carbon monoxide affects the body, how to recognize the warning signs, and practical steps pilots and aircraft owners can take to improve safety in the cockpit.
